What to Expect in this Workshop
This experience is designed with intention, from the atmosphere we create to the way each session flows. Whether you're coming to gain new skills, connect with other artists, or simply spark fresh ideas, you can expect:
to learn techniques for layering
to get ideas for making collage papers with which you can layer and build personal context
to have ample time to experiment, as well as time to reflect on what kind of layering holds energy for you
to begin to discover what qualities matter in your work and why
I thrive in creative environments that are relaxed, personal, and have a nice balance between demonstration and experimentation, and this workshop reflects these qualities. My heartfelt belief is that every artist has their own personal style, voice, and agenda that needs to be discovered and made known to themselves through exploration, so a big emphasis in Creating Expressive Layers will be to gently reflect on how these techniques might help you express more fully, as well as what that expression could look like.
As artists, being expressive requires something more than just learning techniques and skills. We have to learn about ourselves, as artists, in order to understand and have access to our own unique expression. When I discovered this after many years of painting, it was like being an artist went from a flat 2D experience to something that was multi-dimensional, deeply meaningful, and so satisfying.

Workshop Location: Hyatt Place Brentwood Conference Room
This hotel is located on a hilltop in Brentwood, TN with a Target and restaurants within walking distance (although this area is hilly). Marabeth Quin, a self-taught artist, has been creating mixed media work for 30 years. With a deep interest in creative growth and expression, she loves to share her technical knowledge, as well as her insights on the joy of embarking on the journey of artistic maturity. She lives and creates from her home in Nashville, TN.
